Training

 

The RSE Hub offers a wide range of training courses. We can deliver them in your setting or occasionally throughout the year we may offer them at various South West venues. Keep an eye on the website or sign up to our updates for details.

Courses are available as a full day, a half day or twilight sessions dependent on the course. If you are interested in any of the courses, or some bespoke training please email us on info@rsehub.org.uk

  • New To RSE

This course covers everything you need to teach RSE sensitively and effectively even if you have never taught it before. It includes the required subject knowledge, and builds skills in answering difficult questions, dealing with spontaneous issues, safeguarding and much more.  This course is suitable for all educators working with children and young people including teachers, school nurses, and youth workers.

  • Refreshing RSE practice

This course covers latest quality practice in RSE. It will briefly refresh on the latest information about contraception and STI’s, before exploring how to cover issues such as consent, abusive relationships, pornography, sexuality which are traditionally missing from many aspects of RSE provision. This course is suitable for all educators working with children and young people including teachers, school nurses, and youth workers.

  • Leading RSE in your setting

This course covers leadership in Relationship and Sex Education provision. It includes working with senior leaders, parents, other stakeholders. It will explore how to plan and provide a high quality curriculum. All participants will get a free copy of the Quality Review Framework document to assess and improve their RSE. This course is suitable for PSHE co-ordinators, particularly in secondary schools

  • Teaching about internet safety and sex in the media

This course covers how to explore internet safety and sex in the media with children and young people. It covers the law, the extent of the issue, attitudes and values around pornography. This course will equip educators with session ideas and strategies for doing with work. This course is suitable for all educators working with children and young people including teachers, school nurses, and youth workers.

  • Putting the R in RSE

 

There are complaints that RSE can focus too much on “plumbing and prevention” and not enough on relationships. This course aims to address putting the R in RSE by exploring how to teach effectively about relationships. It will explore developing relationship skills, understanding consent, teaching about trust, respect, negotiation, communication. It will also explore understandings of negative and unhealthy relationships and how to support students to recognise the “relationship red flags” that indicate a relationship is problematic.

  • Evidence based approaches to gendered harassment.

Gendered harassment includes sexist and sexual bullying, homophobic and transphobic bullying. This course will explore the influence of gender on each of these types of harassment and suggest evidence based principles for action.  The course will explore how school culture can create cultures of harassment and provide opportunities to practice addressing such harassment. This course is particularly useful for school leaders but this course can also be tailored to other participants. Contact us for more details.

Using the Quick Reference Guides – Teaching contraception and STI’s

Teaching contraception and STI’s can be challenging if you don’t feel you have the health or science background to cover it. With this is mind the Hub developed Quick Reference Guides to support educators with all the crucial information to cover the material in an accessible way. This course will cover all the methods of contraception and STI’s in a straightforward way equipping educators with the knowledge and understanding to deliver this education confidently and effectively.  This half- day course is particularly suitable for teachers and youth workers.

Using the Quality Review Framework

Quality assurance of RSE is important and young people repeatedly state RSE is “too little, too late and too biological”. The Quality Review Framework enables you to quality assure your RSE provision by evaluating existing provision and action planning for improvement. This course will enable you to lead a school through the completing the quality review framework and provide training in meeting crucial standards around leadership, teaching team, teaching and learning, programme content, and the learning community. It will then enable you to action plan for continuous subject improvement. Opportunities will also be provided to be partnered with a peer schools to enable wider perspectives, collaboration and support.
